Nepali Congress Faces Aggressive Criticism from Home Minister Over Prime Minister Offer Rejection: What’s Next for Party Agreements?
Deputy Prime Minister and Home Minister Rabi Lamichhane has issued strong statements against the main opposition party, Nepali Congress, and its leaders, who are demanding an investigation into a cooperative scandal. Speaking in the House of Representatives today, Lamichhane’s remarks have raised questions about the future of the agreements between the parties.
During his address, Home Minister Lamichhane questioned Congress President Sher Bahadur Deuba regarding the offer to become Prime Minister.
“If it’s not acceptable for me to be Home Minister, then on what moral grounds is it acceptable for me to become Prime Minister?” he asked. “My question is, has the offer to accept me as Prime Minister from one and a half years ago expired, or is it still valid? If Congress President Deuba can answer this question while standing in this House, it would be beneficial for me.”
Lamichhane claimed he had no involvement in the embezzlement of cooperative funds.
Targeting Congress General Secretary Gagan Thapa, Lamichhane said, “Let’s not only prosecute those involved in cooperative fraud but also those who embezzle agricultural subsidies to raise chickens, fish, goats, and sheep. Let’s also oust those who hold multiple citizenships and passports, and those who sell the country’s confidential information to foreign agents. Let’s remove them from Parliament.”
He challenged Thapa, saying, “Regardless of their power, whether they are ministers or party general secretaries, I had said I would quit politics if proven that I took a loan. It’s been many days, and I have not received any proof. But don’t worry, you don’t have to leave politics. This country needs leaders like you.”
Lamichhane assured that the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP) would not be intimidated by media rumors.
This incident has left many wondering about the future of the supposed agreements between the parties.
